580 students spent week of spring break helping Houston bounce back from Hurricane Harvey

Houston –Middle school and high school students from churches all across Texas spent a week of their spring break helping Houston bounce back from Hurricane Harvey.

From March 12-13 & March 15-16, the 580 students and student leaders volunteering with BOUNCE Student Disaster Recovery completed projects such as installing drywall, insulation, siding, painting and flooring for homeowners who had been affected by the disaster.

Copperfield Church hosted the students, providing hot meals and showers when they returned from a long day’s work.

“Seeing everyone come together to pick up hardwood and tile on the side of the road, tear down walls and put up drywall has humbled me. Things like this can happen to anyone and I’m thankful that we could step up and help out,” said Kylie Sattizahn, 9th grade, Meadows Baptist Church.

BOUNCE partnered with CY-HOPE Disaster Recovery Network to help with providing project assignments and construction materials.

“I’m very encouraged by the highly motivated students we have with us here this week here at BOUNCE,” said David Scott, director of BOUNCE. “They are working hard without complaint as they serve the residents of Houston. As always, it is our hope that this won’t be something that our students do for a couple of days at spring break, but that missions will become a part of who they are.”

BOUNCE is a ministry of Texas Baptists, which is affiliated with more than 5,300 Texas Baptist churches and ministries. BOUNCE invites students to assist communities in their efforts to bounce back from devastation after a disaster has struck.

There will be 6 additional missions during the summer in Harvey affected areas, including the Nederland/Port Arthur, Houston, Victoria and Corpus Christi Rockport areas.
