AUSTIN -- The Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission will host its 2019 Advocacy Day March 26-27 in Austin for ministers, leaders, students and advocates. Workshops and general sessions will be held at Woodlawn Baptist Church Tuesday, March 26, and appointments with legislative offices will take place at the Capitol Wednesday, March 27.

Michael Gerson, a nationally syndicated columnist who appears twice weekly in The Washington Post and former top aide to President George W. Bush, is the featured speaker for the event. He is the author of “Heroic Conservatism” (HarperOne, 2007) and co-author of “City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era” (Moody, 2010). He appears regularly on the “PBS NewsHour,” “Face the Nation” and other programs.

“As Jesus followers, every aspect of our lives should be brought under the authority of Scripture, including how we vote and engage in politics,” said Kathryn Freeman, CLC public policy director. “Advocacy Day is not about giving perfect solutions, but it is about giving Christians the tools to think biblically about some of the most pressing public policy issues of our day.”

Additional workshop speakers include Freeman; Matt Soerens, U.S. director of church mobilization for World Relief; Kelly Rosati, nationally recognized child and family advocate and CEO of KMR Consulting; Shirley Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; Andrea Ramirez, former head of Faith & Education for the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference; and Mike Hogan, regional field director for the ONE Campaign.

"Immigration is one of the most urgent issues facing the Church in the U.S. today, and perhaps nowhere more than in Texas,” said Soerens. “Many congregations face the tension of wanting to serve and show God’s love to immigrant communities while also respecting the law and protecting the safety of our country. I’m excited to be a part of the Christian Life Commission’s Advocacy Day, to be able to dive into these complex questions with Texas Baptist leaders, bringing a biblical perspective to this timely issue.”

Topics addressed through the workshops will include religious liberty, poverty, pro-life advocacy, biblical principles around immigration and strengthening educational outcomes for school-aged children.

The Austin-based CLC hosts this bi-annual event to facilitate education, networking and dialogue on important policy issues impacting Texas Baptists.
