On May 6, Texas Baptists hosted a Prayer Call in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer. Texas Baptists leaders read scripture and voiced prayers for healthy churches, border ministry, renewed missions and more.

“As Texas Baptists we certainly want to be participants in this [Day of Prayer]. We are a people who believe in and want to be a people who are of prayer,” Executive Director David Hardage said as he opened the call. “And so this is an opportunity for us to come together as a Texas Baptists family and pray for different needs around the country.

Speakers included Jonathan Smith, director of Church Health Strategy; Mario Gonzalez, director of River Ministry/Mexico Missions; Michael Evans Jr., director of Public Policy with the Christian Life Commission; and Tamiko Jones, executive director/treasurer of the WMU of Texas.

Smith shared from John 11:35, explaining that God is a God of compassion. He shared that God has been in control throughout the chaos and uncertainty of the past year, and that He will continue to be in control.

“We serve a certain God. We serve a God who takes things like pandemics throughout history and uses them for His glory and for the advancement of His kingdom,” Smith said.

Gonzalez prayed in Spanish and English, asking the Lord to give church and convention leaders wisdom as they continue to make difficult decisions. He prayed that the Lord would bring peace that surpasses understanding.

During Evans’ prayer, he highlighted the 87th Legislative Session of Texas, praying for the lawmakers and those who would be affected by the laws being debated. He thanked the Lord for giving Christians guidance and asked that they not be swayed by political sides, but rather would stay focused on God.

Jones closed the call with a prayer for a renewed heart for missions in the state. She read from Acts 13:47 as she asked the Lord to bless state missions and missionaries. She prayed that He would help Texas Baptists meet physical and spiritual needs across the state.

“We humbly ask that you continue to allow us to be your hands and your feet, from the Valley to the Panhandle,” she prayed.
