River Ministry

More than 300 volunteers from around the U.S. completed 33 service projects across the Rio Grande Valley as a part of Serve Tour Brownsville held Oct. 11-12.

More than 200 pastors and church leaders gathered in Querétaro, Mexico, to receive training in discipleship, pastoral leadership, church planting and evangelism during a fall session this past year.

Just miles from the border between Texas and Mexico, Texas Baptists gathered during the 2023 Texas Baptists Family Gathering to celebrate 55 years of River Ministry at the Missions Banquet.

“They were hungry to receive the Lord.”

“Even though they’re entering the border, they’re also entering the Kingdom of God through this ministry.”

“We are here to strengthen local churches, encourage local pastors and provide support to the communities in need,”

River Ministry missionaries on the Texas/Mexico border are working hard to provide resources and hope in the midst of COVID-19.

Along the Texas-Mexico border, Texas Baptists River Ministry missionaries work hard to share God’s love with the immigrants, refugees and locals who live on both sides of the border. 

In 1967, the Baptist General Convention of Texas recognized the 2 million people living along the border of Texas and Mexico as an important mission point and launched the Rio Grande Mission Thrust with $250,000 allocated for missions opportunities.

Daniel Rangel joined with Mario Gonzalez, director of Texas Baptists Multi-housing and House Congregations, to train house church leaders on ministering to new congregations in Laredo.

Osvaldo and Vanessa Lerma have served as Texas Baptists River Ministry missionaries in the Rio Grande Valley for a combined 25 years.
