Al Curley, III joins Texas Baptists Evangelism team as African American Evangelism Specialist

The Texas Baptists Center for Church Health welcomed Dr. Al Curley, III, as the new African American Evangelism Specialist. Curley transitioned from his prior position as associate pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington. He assumed the position on Jan. 5.

Curley said his new role is a “phenomenal opportunity to be directly involved in the life of the Convention.”

“I'm from New York originally, and I had never seen a convention operate in the way that Texas Baptists does, in the way that it resources and serves churches,” said Curley. “So if my entire ministry career was going to be full-time in the local church [and] I was going to be in Texas, I wanted to be involved with Texas Baptists.”

Prior to his time at Texas Baptists, Curley served in several pastoral roles at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington since 2021, including Youth and Young Adults pastor, where he developed the church’s college ministry and men’s ministry.

Curley said his goal is to “resource as many churches as possible with [evangelism] strategies and goals, [and] to be able to track and mark their growth from day one.”

“I don't desire for that [growth] to be compartmentalized, but that every generation in the church feels equipped and empowered to go out and pursue the Great Commission and the Great Commandment,” said Curley.

Curley earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from State University of New York at Old Westbury, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University.

“As the African American Evangelism Specialist, Dr. Curley brings a culturally informed, relational approach to sharing the gospel, helping churches engage their communities with clarity, compassion and confidence,” said Oza Jones, director of Evangelism at Texas Baptists.

The Texas Baptists Evangelism team exists to challenge, equip and train Texas Baptists, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to passionately fulfill God’s call to reach all people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
