Serving others at Wayland Baptist University
On September 26, 2020, approximately 50 Wayland Baptist University students gathered at a vacant lot in Seth Ward, a low socio-economic community on the northeast edge of Plainview, TX. Their goal was to clean.
Every year, the new students in the Bachelor of Applied Science orientation classes at Wayland are required to undertake a service project. Last year’s project was so popular that the school’s chapel groups, who are encouraged to take on student-led service initiatives, were also eager to participate.
Office of Spiritual Development Director Donnie Brown said that the student-led initiatives are benefitting several groups and organizations in the community. Chapel groups are assisting with food drives to benefit the Faith in Sharing House, others are working with organizations like the Rainbow Room, Salvation Army and Crisis Center. Still others are coming up with initiatives to raise awareness of human trafficking. A number of other service projects are also being planned and will take place throughout the remainder of the semester.
Brown said the chapel students’ response to the initiative has been inspiring.
“They don’t have to be involved in this. It’s not a requirement for them to do this shine project,” he said. “But what we’re seeing is that they’re involved. They want to be involved and they’re coming up with some incredible ideas and that’s what’s so cool about it.”

El 26 de septiembre, 2020, cerca de 50 estudiantes de la Universidad Bautista Wayland se reunieron en un lote baldío en la comunidad Seth Ward, una comunidad de nivel socioeconómico bajo al noreste de Plainview, TX. Su meta era limpiar.
Cada año, se requiere que los estudiantes nuevos en los cursos de orientación de Bachillerato en Ciencias Aplicadas en Wayland asuman un proyecto de servicio. El proyecto del año anterior fue tan popular que los grupos de capilla de la escuela, quienes se animan a tomar iniciativas de servicio por los estudiantes, estaban ansiosos por participar.
El director de la Oficina de Desarrollo Espiritual, Donnie Brown, dijo que las iniciativas dirigidas por estudiantes beneficiaban a diversos grupos y organizaciones en la comunidad. Los grupos de capilla ayudan con recolección de alimentos para beneficiar la Casa Compartir la Fe, otros trabajan con organizaciones como el Salón Arcoíris, el Ejército de Salvación, y en Centro de Crisis. Y, otros trabajan creando consciencia respecto al tráfico humano. Otro número de proyectos de servicios están siendo planificados y se llevarán a cabo durante el resto del semestre.
Brown dijo que la respuesta de los estudiantes a la iniciativa ha sido inspiradora.
“Ellos no tienen que participar en esto. No es un requisito el hacer este proyecto de limpieza, dijo. "Pero, lo que vemos es que están participando. Quieren participar y tienen ideas increíbles y eso es lo que es bueno acerca de esto".
Cuando su iglesia aporta al Programa Cooperativo, apoyan a la Universidad Bautista Wayland al proveer una educación cristiana a la próxima generación de líderes.
