Go Now student missionaries commissioned for summer missions

Two hundred students and their families gathered on May 20 for the Go Now Missions Commissioning Service held at Dallas Baptist University. The service was an opportunity for families and friends to worship alongside the student missionaries before leaving for mission across the world.

The Commissioning was also the finale to Go Now Missions Orientation Weekend for the student missionaries, providing a weekend of training, prayer and study. A total of 286 students will be on mission this summer in locations including Thailand, South Africa, Brazil, New York, Arlington and many more.

Focused on being “Sent”, the weekend’s theme was rooted in the words of Jesus in John 20 - “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

Ben Edfeldt, Go Now Sending Team member, took time to recognize the families in attendance. He said to the students, “Offer thanks to the Lord for your families, for all of the years they have poured into you. Pray for peace.” They took the next ten minutes to do just that. Every family member and friend in the room was prayed over by the students.

As the service continued, Gary Davis, Sending Team chairperson, presented a challenge to the students. After reading from John 20:19-22, he said, “The peace Jesus spoke to his disciples in this passage is the same peace Jesus is offering you and me today.”

One student who attended the orientation weekend, David Marquez, is getting to live out his dream of being a missionary this summer in Spain. After being involved in an accident, he wasn’t sure if he would ever be able to walk again.

“God fulfills His promises and answered my prayers,” he said. “I humbly in desperate need prayed to be able to walk again, and to never have pain again. I prayed for opportunities to share the Gospel and travel as a missionary. This is my first opportunity since my accident to actually leave home and do nothing but serve God.”

Join us in praying for these students and their families this summer.
