Special Friends Retreat

Special Friends Retreat gives those with intellectual disabilities a unique opportunity to have an overnight camp experience. It is something repeat campers look forward to all year long.
“One of the parents told me that at the beginning of summer, their daughter begins to pack for camp,” said Diane Lane, childhood discipleship specialist with the Texas Baptists Great Commission Team. “And a Sunday School teacher told me that they start talking about camp at Easter (even though it takes place in the fall) because they have so much joy when they come to the retreat.”
During the overnight retreat, campers have a chance to participate in Bible studies, worship, games and crafts in a refreshing, safe atmosphere. Parents benefit from talking to other caregivers going through similar challenges and by learning about helpful resources.
Special Friends would not be possible without our gifts from our church and others through the Cooperative Program. We help provide scholarships to families who cannot afford registration fees and help cover the cost of stipends for people working during the retreats. Let’s pray for this ministry and for the families and participants whose lives are changed by it.

El Retiro de Amigos Especiales proporciona a aquellos con discapacidades intelectuales la oportunidad única de asistir a un campamento; una experiencia que quienes ya han vivido esperan con ansiedad todo el año.
“Uno de los padres me dijo que al comienzo del verano su hija empezó a empacar su maleta para ir al campamento”, dijo Diane Lane, especialista de discipulado de niños del Equipo de la Gran Comisión de los Bautistas de Texas. “Y una maestra de escuela dominical me dijo que empezaban a hablar del campamento durante la Semana Santa (a pesar de que el campamento es en el otoño) porque se divierten mucho en él.
Los campistas tienen la oportunidad de asistir a estudios bíblicos, alabar, jugar y hacer manualidades en un ambiente seguro y refrescante. Los padres tienen la oportunidad de hablar con otros padres que tienen desafíos similares a los suyos y reciben información de recursos útiles.
El Retiro de Amigos Especiales no sería posible sin las ofrendas que nuestras iglesias dan al Programa Cooperativo, el cual ayuda a proveer becas a familias que no pueden pagar el costo de la inscripción, y ayuda a cubrir el estipendió que se les da a las personas que trabajan en el retiro. Oremos por este ministerio y por las familias y participantes cuyas vidas son transformadas a través de esta experiencia.
