Planting a church in the hard soil of the Pacific Northwest
NAMB missionaries Patrick and Jennifer Grant planted Woodstock Community Church in the southeastern part of Portland with one goal: Making Jesus known.
The city of 2.3 million people has been torn apart by racial and political strife in recent years; more than 85 percent of the population is lost. The Pacific Northwest is among the least churched regions of the United States – it is known in one study of religious identification as “the None Zone.” Understanding the need and incredibly burdened, Patrick and Jennifer – along with their six children – moved from Georgia to launch the church, which meets in a community center.
The church reaches out with sports camps, block parties and backpacks filled with school supplies – and sometimes, doing laundry for people. Those efforts lead to opportunities to talk about Jesus.
