In recent years, an alarming number of sexual abuse stories have surfaced. Prioritizing safety within the church walls is an important step in ministering to people, according to Katie Swafford, counseling services director at Texas Baptists.
“In today’s environment, people want to know that if they entrust their children in the church’s care and that we are going to do everything we can to keep the children safe,” Swafford said.
Leaders at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield recognized the importance for their staff and volunteers to be trained in knowing how to prevent sexual abuse and hosted a MinistrySafe training coordinated by Texas Baptists.
“The importance of MinistrySafe Training is recognizing that the world is a dangerous place,” said Rev. Zachariah Johnson, minister of education. “It is our duty as a church at large to protect the sanctity of our grounds. The church should be a safe place in an uncertain world.”
Our church’s gifts through the Cooperative Program help support the counseling services that Texas Baptists provides, including resources to survivors of abuse. Let’s pray for wisdom for our counselors as they minister to sexual abuse survivors and for those who lead MinistrySafe trainings.
