TXB Spotlight with David Lorenz

David Lorenz is pastor of First Baptist Friendswood. Get to know his background and how you can be praying for his church during Pastor Appreciation Month.

Q: When and how did God call you to be a pastor?

A: About a year after I graduated from college, I sensed that God was doing something in my life. During college, I served in the local church, but never gave full-time ministry a thought. However, once in the “real world,” I was floundering and unsatisfied with my career path — graduate school to become a Political Science professor. Something just wasn’t right. I believed God wanted something different for me, but I was hesitant to pursue it. After praying for some time (months), talking with my pastor, and seeking other godly wisdom, I surrendered to full-time ministry on October 30, 1994. I finished out the semester and began seminary that spring. God has confirmed His call on my life repeatedly throughout the decades.

Q: What is one exciting thing God is doing in and/or through your church right now?

A: Our church is currently in the middle of a seven-year vision to become disciple-making missionaries among our neighbors in our community. It is exciting to hear stories from our members on how their calling is being lived out. We get to celebrate when business leaders share Scripture with co-workers, when supervisors pray with their staff, when widows bring encouragement and hope to other widows, and when teenagers and adults are baptized because a friend or family member shared the gospel with them. We believe everyone can have a personal impact on others and it’s exciting to see it happen.

Q: How can people pray for your church?

Our community is a wonderful place with wonderful people, but Texas Baptists can pray that our church will be a blessing to our city and the three counties surrounding us. We want our neighbors to experience the fullness of life found only in Jesus.

Texas Baptists is a movement of God’s people to share Christ and show love by strengthening churches and ministers, engaging culture and connecting the nations to Jesus.

The ministry of the convention is made possible by giving through the Texas Baptists Cooperative Program, Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions, Texas Baptists Worldwide and Texas Baptist Missions Foundation. Thank you for your faithful and generous support.
