Expanding ministry amidst pandemic challenges
God’s word for Rafael and Sarah Araujo this year was simple: Don’t give up on 2020!
The Araujos minister to Latin Americans residing in Canada through the Texas Baptists Missionary Adoption Program (MAP). They partner with Burnaby North Baptist Church and serve a small, Portugese-speaking congregation called Burnaby Born Again.
COVID-19 brought some challenges to the Araujos. Rafael lost his part-time job as a personal trainer, and the Araujo children were forced to do their schooling at home. The church also struggled, with some church families leaving, and their numbers dwindled down to only about a dozen.
But thanks to the necessary transition to digital conferences, the number of those receiving Rafael’s message has grown to reach not only Latinos in Greater Vancouver, but also to Nicaragua, the United States, Brazil and Poland.
“Currently we are studying the Gospel of John together during the week (over Zoom) and transmitting our services live on Facebook in Portuguese and in Spanish,” Sarah said. “Rafael is doing the translation simultaneously!”
When we give to the Cooperative Program, we help support MAP missionaries like Rafael and Sarah, who are spreading the Gospel to all corners of the world.

La palabra de Dios para Rafael y Sarah Araujo este año fue simple: ¡No se rindan en 2020!
Los Araujo ministran a latinoamericanos residiendo en Canadá por medio del Programa de Adopción Misionera de los Bautistas de Texas (MAP). Ellos colaboran con Burnaby North Baptist Church y sirven a una congregación pequeña, de habla portugués, llamada Burnaby Nacer de Nuevo (Burnaby Born Again).
El COVID-19 presentó ciertos desafíos para los Araujos. Rafael perdió su trabajo a tiempo parcial como entrenador personal, y los hijos de los Araujo fueron obligados a recibir instrucción en casa. La iglesia también batalló con la salida de algunas familias de la iglesia, reduciéndose su asistencia a solamente una docena.
Pero, gracias a la necesaria transición a conferencias digitales, la cantidad de los que reciben el mensaje de Rafael ha crecido para alcanzar no solamente a latinos en el área superior de Vancouver, sino también en Nicaragua, los Estados Unidos, Brasil, y Polonia.
"Actualmente estamos estudiando el Evangelio de Juan juntos durante la semana (usando Zoom) y transmitiendo nuestros servicios en vivo en Facebook en portugués y en español", dijo Sara. "¡Rafael hace la traducción simultáneamente!"
